FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE...

Will stock market history repeat itself this September?

Five tips to make sure you're prepared

Toronto, Sept. 3 – Wharton finance professor Jeremy Siegel has said that historically, September is by far the worst month for stock market returns.  Personal finance author Gail P. Bebee thinks that history may well repeat itself this year.

Says Bebee: “Yesterday, the first trading day of September, the S&P/TSX Composite Index lost 3.43 % and the OECD reduced its 2008 economic growth forecast for Canada to just 0.8 per cent. Investors should get prepared for a rocky September on the markets.”

Bebee offers five tips to help investors weather uncertain stock markets:

Re-examine your tolerance for risk. How much money can you really lose and still sleep at night?

Review your investment goals and confirm they are still current. If you don’t have investment goals, take the time to develop some.

Sell any investments that don’t fit your current risk tolerance and investment goals.

If you have money to invest, consider using it to pay off debt, especially high interest debt like credit cards: it’s a guaranteed positive return.

Stick to your investment plan. Avoid panic selling of quality investments that fit your goals.

Bebee is available to speak with the media on the savvy financial industry outsider’s view of the current investing environment. For further information, or to arrange an interview, please contact:
